At the Edge of Perception
Layers of Charcoal, Spray Paint, Pigment, Glue

This series explores the tension between absence and presence, using charcoal and pastel either poured directly onto paper or expressed through gestural mark-making, which is both volatile and immediate.

When pouring charcoal, the materials settle unpredictably or chance, echoing geological processes—accumulation, erosion, and transformation—yet they demand swift, physical responses. The studio becomes a site of reckoning, where gravity, chaos, and intention collide. These works are built from darkness, where seeing becomes an act of deep searching.

The gestural works emerge from white—an exploration not of clarity, but of concealment. In these pieces, brightness itself becomes unstable. Visibility flickers. The field becomes charged, and meaning hovers just beyond reach.

Both pathways are part of the same inquiry: how meaning flashes at the edge of perception. Whether through the emergence of shadow or the immersion of light, I’m drawn to moments when figure and ground of the image are interconnected or they resist resolution, contend and invite interruption.
This work does not illustrate meaning; it allows meaning to surface. It is a visual investigation—one that unfolds between control and surrender, light and shadow, the seen and the felt.
