Cirque du Dandelion

• Cirque du Dandelion - a photographic project
  

My goal for this project was nothing other than to create artwork that is playful. However, upon reflection I now realize that the work echoes the same themes that often appear in my imagery. I am attempting to expresses my ideas about a fleeting existence and the contrast that I perceive between, courage and fragility, and strength with vulnerability. As it turns out, Cirque des Dandelion is a self-reflective query regarding the contradictions that define a collective, human experience.

In order to exaggerate these ideas, I constructed and then scanned small scenes that are reminiscent of circus performances. I built these scenes with dandelion seeds and thread. While holding my breath so that the seeds don't take flight, I assemble the 'circus act' on a flat bed scanner and then use the scanner to digitally capture each
construction.

The resulting photo-images are frozen moments that link a joyful nostalgic past with my present feelings about adventure, chance and possibility. I find the circus actor to be an especially interesting character because he or she represents the superhero. They are not permitted to fail - yet, for them, the possibility of catastrophe is always present. The narrative within the imagery depicts the dandelion seeds as actors who are suspended in moments when their implied actions risk failure, however the hope for their triumph persists.
